Lupercal: Closing the Latinitas Gender Gap

Donation protected
"Lupercal" is a Latin reading group that works to close the gendered gap in Latinitas, and provide a space for women and non-binary Latinists to learn from each other.  Currently, many of the highest institutions of Latin learning only admit or hire men. Spoken Latin courses, lectures, and programs are disproportionately staffed by men, so this group provides a valuable space for us to learn from each other.

This week, the very existence of "Lupercal" was criticized on Facebook.  Within hours, messages of support and encouragement for our group flooded in, and showed how many people support our work.   Today, the sexist and transphobic comments continued, which calls us to action now.

Our goal is to reach $4,187-- the number of characters typed against Lupercal over the past week.  With this money, we will purchase copies of "De Mulieribus Claris" ("On Famous Women" by Boccaccio), which is the Latin book our group reads one chapter of every month.

All funds will used for the purchasing and delivering of copies of this book to current and future members of Lupercal.

Thank you in advance for your support!

******************************************UPDATE: 6/11/19*************************************************

Thanks to yesterday’s incredible outpouring of support for Lupercal, we can now buy a copy of "On Famous Women" for every active member! We still have a long way to go to meet our fundraising goal and continue our important work, so please continue to share. These funds will also provide Starter Packs for women and non-binary classicists to start reading groups in their hometowns. We’ll send books, lesson plans, and materials for those first meetings. Donate to help us continue to bridge the gendered gap in Latinitas everywhere. Thank you everyone, from all of us at Lupercal!

And, on a personal note: the messages, public and private, that I have received this week have been unbelievably touching. So many people have reached out to offer support, start groups of their own, and share their own stories of discrimination and the need for Lupercal. Perhaps the most inspiring messages have come from undergraduate students who see in Lupercal a space where they can already be leaders in Latin circles. We are reaching more people than ever, and thank you for helping Lupercal grow!
